The science-based benefits of journaling
Welcome to The Productivity Blueprint newsletter 🗞️
In the last issue we discussed the concept of “feeling stuck” and a bit of the science behind why our brain thinks like that! If you missed it, you can catch up here 🙂
Todays topic is journaling, a pretty popular hobby that has a lot of benefits for the human brain đź§
“Journal writing, when it becomes a ritual for transformations, is not only life-changing, but life-expanding.”
Journaling is a great activity that has many health benefits, both mental and physical. Although not for everyone, not many people even take the energy to try it in the first place. From improved immune system to reduced blood pressure, there are SO many health benefits that journalling provides (if you’re interested to learn more, this article goes in depth of 17 health benefits journaling provides for writers).
So if you’re interested in beginning journalling, here are some tips to build the habit:
Time block: allocate specific times to different tasks, assign a time period to journal
Format: find a format that suits you, some include: poetry, bullet-point, and plus minus next journaling
Be realistic: Make sure the time you dedicate to journalling caters to your own schedule, don’t overwhelm yourself!
If you are still having trouble or worry you might need more to help you kickstart your journalling experience, we’ve shared some of Ness Labs tools below that may help.
Keep in mind, with countless journaling tools available, choose one that fits your needs without overcomplicating things. Whether you write daily or intermittently, the key is to find a method that works for you. Journaling is a flexible tool for managing mental health—use it when it suits you and remember not to pressure yourself.
TL/DR: Journaling provides valuable mental and physical health benefits, though many people don't try it. To start, set specific times for journaling, choose a format that works for you, and be realistic about your schedule. An important thing to remember: journaling should fit your needs and not add pressure to your life!
As stated in the article, Roam Research is an effective note taking app that can serve as a platform for you to journal. It can create connections and patterns between each entry you make. | This is a very popular site that encourages daily journal entries by applying a “point-system” to its users. All entries are fully private and you are allowed to write about whatever comes to mind! |
đź’ˇ Challenge of the week
We think you have a good idea what this weeks challenge might be… Try to journal if you haven’t already! Write whatever comes to mind for 10-15 minutes a day and see if you enjoy this new activity. If you need help, here are some journaling prompts to get started with.
That’s all for this newsletter! We hope you enjoyed exploring the benefits of journaling and are inspired to give it a try.
Until next week,
